Im attempting to iron out in my head a couple of points regarding the proof markings just after reading through the post regarding the 1892 While using the “Oval P” marked receiver, and other forum discussions on this matter. After 1905, Winchester began stamping barrels, after which you can receivers, Using the “WP” Winchester definitive proof.

I personally am not from the view that Winchester ever used mail order barrels in the factory to accomplish or fill orders. Ned Schwing said in his reference guide to the Product 1890 & 1906 that Winchester began proof marking them in 1908… I have no idea if that is certainly correct, but will assume that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was applied once the barrel and receiver had been mated, assembled and concluded. This is highly apparent on the firearms made within the late teenagers via early 30s if the blue flaked (popped) off when the proof was struck to the receiver frame.
